COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The one-month nomination period has opened to find Ohio’s first poet laureate.

Nominations can be submitted to the Ohio Arts Council via email to [email protected] The nomination period opened Monday and will close at 5 p.m. May 20.

It’s the first step toward the Ohio Arts Council finding the first poet laureate, who will work with the council on programs promoting literary arts and encouraging the creative interests of Ohioans.

That person also will be expected to undertake a significant cultural project, such as bringing poetry to underserved Ohioans, and will provide at least 10 public readings or events annually throughout Ohio.

The position was created by the Legislature last year, making Ohio the 45th state to do so.
