PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - A Pascagoula man who used Bible scriptures to justify to a minor the sex crimes he was forcing her to endure will serve 20 years day-for-day in prison.

Circuit Judge Dale Harkey imposed the sentence Monday, ordering 45-year-old John Kirk Councilman to also pay $30,000 in fines, a special assessment totaling $2,000 to the Mississippi Children’s Trust fund and all court costs.

In addition, the judge ordered him to serve a total of 15 years of post-release supervision and to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1G0tPCr ) before the sentence, Harkey said he was “appalled” by Councilman’s use of Bible verses to manipulate the then 12-year-old child.
