BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - Biloxi High School has been asked to change its Indians mascot after the band marched in D.C.’s Cherry Blossom Festival parade earlier this month.

The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/1Hdomhe) reports students wore Native American war bonnets during their performance on April 11. The feathered headdresses caught the attention of the Indian Country Today Media Network, which published an article about how the costumes ingrained disrespect among students. A Change.org petition is asking the band to change its mascot. A counter petition is asking the school to keep the name.

School officials have defended the mascot, saying the band represents Biloxi in a dignified manner.

Numerous high schools and universities throughout the country have dropped their Native American mascots in recent years.
