BLOOMFIELD, Conn. (AP) - The state of Connecticut has received a gift of about 40 acres of land in Bloomfield.

Elizabeth Shiro (SHEE’-row), managing member of Apple Orchard LLC and the granddaughter of Beatrice Fox Auerbach, the co-founder of the former G. Fox department store, has donated her family’s property on Cider Hill Road, off Auer Farm Road.

The property will be preserved as public open space and known as the Auerfarm State Park Scenic Reserve, in memory of Auerbach family.

Shiro said Tuesday her parents, Dorothy and Bernard Schiro, wanted to preserve the land and ensure the public could enjoy the property, which offers scenic views of nearby state parks and the Hartford skyline.

The reserve includes grasslands, historic apple orchards and woodlands habitat.
