SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Jeannie Ann Sandoval says the chain of events that led to her step-grandfather’s death began when he denied her a cigarette.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports (https://bit.ly/1HdWQA2) that Sandoval testified Monday that her boyfriend killed the man she considered her father, 75-year-old George Ortiz.

She and 26-year-old Anthony Yepez were living with Ortiz in October 2012 following her completion of a rehab program.

She said Ortiz hit her one night when she tried to get a cigarette. Yepez then choked Ortiz and Sandoval tried to run away.

Yepez’s attorney said he didn’t intend to kill Ortiz and panicked when he saw the man was dead.

She said Sandoval helped Yepez cover Ortiz’s body in cooking oil and set it on fire.

Sandoval has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case.
