INTERLAKEN, N.Y. (AP) - School administrators in central New York made a startling discovery when they found a loaded gun in a 7-year-old boy’s coat pocket.

The Syracuse Post-Standard (https://bit.ly/1btmvHW) reports that officials say the first-grader didn’t intend to hurt anyone when he brought the gun to school Tuesday. It’s unclear why he had the gun.

Interlaken Police Chief Leon Anderson says safety protocols were followed when the gun was found, but the Seneca County school wasn’t put on lockdown because police were sure there wasn’t a threat to other students.

Police are unsure how the boy got his hands on the gun.

No one has been charged in the case, but police continue to investigate.
