FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Police say a man and woman left their 11-month old daughter alone in a locked car while they shopped at a southwest Florida Wal-Mart.

The couple told police they had “forgotten” the child was in the car on Sunday afternoon. The investigation revealed that 27-year-old Carl Merrickes Jr. and 22-year-old Lakisha Green also left three other young children home alone.

The News-Press of Fort Myers (https://newspr.es/1Pgl6TA ) reports Merrickes and Green are each charged with four counts of child neglect.

A passerby heard the little girl crying and forced her way into the vehicle through a slightly opened window. She had a temperature of 101 and was taken to a hospital. The Department of Children and Families was called to determine custody arrangements.

It’s unknown whether the pair retained a lawyer.
