ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) - A former central Kentucky teacher who was charged with sexually abusing students has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The News-Enterprise (https://bit.ly/1Oe9wex) reports the sentence for Edwin Bonet of Radcliff was handed down Tuesday in Hardin Circuit Court. In addition, he will have to register as a sex offender.

He pleaded guilty in February to charges of sex abuse, criminal attempt to commit unlawful transaction with a minor, prohibited use of an electronic communication system and tampering with evidence.

Bonet was fired from Central Hardin High School in 2013 after his arrest. He had taught Spanish there since 2000.

Victims testified that Bonet violated their trust and took their innocence away.

“I realized Mr. Bonet took advantage of my situation, my vulnerability and my isolation,” one victim said during the sentencing hearing. “Instead of helping of me, he hurt me.”

She said it affected her mental and physical health and her relationships with others.

“I refuse to let this sexual crime be my identity, but it has and it was for a long time,” she said. “I don’t want to be a victim anymore.”

Bonet’s attorney, Roger Rigney, asked the judge to consider his client’s “spotless” criminal record.

“He has deep remorse for his actions,” Rigney said. “He offers his apologies.”

Circuit Judge Kelly Mark Easton addressed the defendant before handing down the sentence.

“Mr. Bonet, you repeatedly used your position of trust to prey on children to satisfy your selfish desires,” he said. “Then you tried to destroy evidence of your crimes, which confirms the criminal nature of your thinking.”

The judge also commended the bravery of the victims who came forward.
