BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - As lawmakers struggle to address the state’s budget troubles, a House member says he received an email threat about one financial proposal.

Rep. John Schroder, a Republican from Covington, proposed ending protections for certain agencies that make it more difficult to distribute budget cuts. He says he’s received strong opposition from public safety groups who thought he was trying to shrink the state supplement given to police officers and firefighters. He says that wasn’t his intention.

Schroder told his colleagues Tuesday that he received an email from a law enforcement officer telling him “to put a gun in my mouth” and pull the trigger. He reported it to state police.

But he says the bill is so divisive he’s shelving it.
