OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) - An attorney for a man charged with the shooting death of a man in Ottumwa has filed notice that he plans to claim self-defense.

The Ottumwa Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1HlEltI ) 24-year-old Dustin McDanel’s attorney on Tuesday notified the court of his intention to claim self-defense in his first-degree murder trial. McDanel is accused of fatally shooting 25-year-old Roger Wiseman Jr. on Jan. 4.

Wiseman was found in an Ottumwa street and died later at a hospital. Authorities say the two men were involved in a dispute over a dog.

Police arrested McDanel Jan. 23 in the St. Louis suburb of Richmond Heights, Missouri. Officers searched a home and found McDanel under a bed.

McDanel’s attorney didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment Wednesday.
