OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi man is fighting for his life after contracting flesh eating bacteria during a weekend fishing trip.

WLOX-TV (https://bit.ly/1bsP6gB) reports Gregory Bru Sr., of Ocean Springs, went fishing near Horn and Chandeleur islands off the Biloxi coast Sunday. A day after the trip, Bru developed symptoms of a life-threatening infection known as Vibrio vulnificus. On Monday, Bru’s leg was amputated just below the knee. He is being treated at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula.

Doctors told the station the bacteria is mostly contracted through skin wounds and people who have a weakened immune system are at a higher risk of complications. Bru’s son says his father has liver disease and had his spleen removed as a child. Bru remains in intensive care.

Vibrio vulnificus thrives in warm, salty water.
