BALTIMORE (AP) - A new public plaza funded by a grant from Southwest Airlines is opening in Baltimore, and the airline is expanding its grant program for public places to six new cities.

Southwest’s Heart of the Community grants aim to reimagine and reactive underutilized public spaces. In Baltimore, a new plaza is opening Wednesday at Pratt and Light streets at the Inner Harbor. Baltimore is a former grant recipient.

On Wednesday, Southwest is announcing the grant program will expand to six new cities this year. They are Albuquerque, New Mexico; Fort Myers, Florida; Jacksonville, Florida; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Portland, Maine; and St. Louis, Missouri.

Southwest works with the Project for Public Spaces on the grant project, and nonprofit groups in each city administer the grants.
