IRMO, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a man shot by sheriff’s deputies in South Carolina has died.

The State Law Enforcement Division says 59-year-old Kimber Key died Tuesday afternoon.

Sheriff Lewis McCarty says Key had been at an Irmo home visiting his brother, who called deputies to say that Key had a knife and was threatening to harm himself.

Officials say two deputies responded early Tuesday and found Key with the knife in the kitchen in the home. They say that at some point, Key was shot in the upper body. State police are investigating the circumstances of the shooting. They say they can’t yet provide more details.

The deputies have been placed on administrative leave during the SLED investigation. They weren’t hurt.

State police say there is no dash cam or body camera video of the incident.
