RENO, Nev. (AP) - Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve (SHEE’-vee) says it may be time to consider whether the “Biggest Little City in the World’s” iconic downtown arch needs a face lift.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (https://tinyurl.com/lwya8nf) the issue came up Tuesday as the city council discussed possible ways to spend a $10 million budget surplus.
Schieve confirmed a city staff member has been working with a group of people who think the current arch installed in 1987 is outdated.
The mayor says she doesn’t necessarily support replacing the arch, but believes it’s time for a community-wide discussion about its future as the city continues to try to reinvent its image.
One proposal is to spend $200,000 to replace the light bulbs with a system that can change colors with the flip of a switch.
