ATLANTA (AP) - Federal officials say several members of an Atlanta-based fraud ring have been arrested.

Secret Service officials said in a statement that eight members of the ring were arrested Thursday, five additional suspects were already in custody and another suspect is expected to surrender.

Authorities say the Secret Service’s Atlanta field office helped investigate the theft of $10 million in U.S. Treasury checks from a post office in Atlanta. Investigators say the checks were cashed at grocery stores, department stores and other businesses.

Officials say the suspects used fraudulent identification to cash the checks - which included tax refunds, Social Security checks and veterans’ benefits.

Authorities say the suspects traveled to nine states including Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana to cash the checks. Officials say the case is still under investigation.
