CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada Democrats say they’re concerned with a proposal allocating $20 million to attract high-quality charter school operators to the state.
Several Democratic lawmakers including Sen. Debbie Smith and Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick raised concerns with SB491 on Friday during an education budget committee hearing.
The measure would allocate $20 million over two years to a nonprofit organization that would need to match the funding and recruit high-quality charter school management organizations to serve students in poverty.
Democrats said they didn’t think that the state should be invested in the success of the charter school industry and had concerns about allocating millions of dollars to private organizations.
Nevada state superintendent Dale Erquiaga compared the measure to state incentives meant to attract businesses to Nevada and said it would better serve low-income students.
