LOS ANGELES (AP) - A house fire with dozens of small explosions in an upscale Los Angeles neighborhood revealed a marijuana-growing operation inside.
City firefighters knocked down the Friday night blaze in Los Feliz (FEE’-liss) in less than 20 minutes, and the damage was mostly limited to a badly burned garage.
But Capt. Daniel Curry says that in its aftermath they found nearly 100 marijuana plants, including many in an empty pool, and scores of butane canisters on the street.
Butane is often used to extract potent hash oil from marijuana plants.
The bomb squad is searching the house for unexploded canisters.
Sean Fernald, who lives across the street, says he heard a succession of loud pops when the fire was burning and first thought it was fireworks.
It wasn’t immediately clear who was living in the house and there were no immediate reports of arrests.
