DALLAS (AP) - A giraffe born at the Dallas Zoo as people around the world watched online has been named.

The Dallas Zoo said Friday that the name Kipenzi (kih-PEHN’-zee) has been chosen for the female calf born April 10. The name means “loved one” in Swahili.

Zookeepers had offered up three choices. The other two possibilities were: Adia (uh-DEE’-uh), meaning “a gift,” and Kanzi (KAHN’-zee) meaning “a treasure.”

Millions watched Kipenzi’s birth through a live video feed from the cable television show “Animal Planet.” The cameras will remain live until Monday morning.

Kipenzi stands more than 6 feet tall. The zoo says she’s expected to start appearing outdoors early next week.
