WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A Western Massachusetts city has agreed to settle with a woman who sued police for taping her mouth shut after she was taken into custody at The Big E fair in 2011.
The Republican newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/1GrHKHj ) that West Springfield and a former police captain reached a settlement with Izabella Monticello, who sued in federal court for assault and battery, infliction of emotional distress and other claims.
Terms of the deal haven’t been disclosed. The city had set aside $100,000 for potential legal expenses.
Police say they took Monticello into custody for being drunk and disorderly at the Eastern States Exposition. A photo later surfaced of her at the police station, bound to a chair and with tape over her mouth.
Police Capt. Daniel O’Brien was fired over the incident.
