REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A 25-year-old woman charged with murder is accused of giving birth at work and hiding the boy in a plastic bag at her desk in suburban Detroit.

Kimberly Pappas of Wyandotte was arraigned Friday on murder and child abuse charges. Police say the baby was discovered on March 31, shortly after the birth in the restroom of a Redford Township business.

The cause of death was suffocation.

A judge declined to release Pappas on bond, despite an appeal by her lawyer to release her for mental health counseling. Ray Cassar says she has “serious issues” and might not understand what’s going on.

Detective Sgt. Kevin Crittenden says it took weeks to file charges because authorities needed to be certain the baby was alive at birth.
