COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Police say a 69-year-old woman was killed when a longtime friend backed his vehicle into her at high speed in a parking lot at an apartment complex in Colorado Springs.

Lt. Scott Schwall tells The Gazette (https://goo.gl/9KdSW5 ) the woman, whose name has not been released, was hit at the Ironwood at Palmer Park complex in the northeastern part of the city Friday afternoon. She died at the scene.

The woman and the 77-year-old man who was driving had gone to lunch earlier in the day and had been good friends for many years. Schwall says the man is distraught but is cooperating with investigators.

Police have not determined if a medical issue contributed to the crash, and they are not sure what caused the man to back up so quickly.
