OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Dollar Tree Inc. has been ordered to pay $2.72 million to settle a civil prosecution lawsuit over illegal hazardous waste disposal.
Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley announced Friday the Virginia-based corporation will also improve waste disposal methods at its California stores and distribution centers under a judge’s order.
An investigation by Alameda County and 47 other DA’s and city attorney offices around the state found that Dollar Tree Stores were illegally dumping into landfills hazmat products like batteries, corrosive liquids and e-waste.
O’Malley’s office says Dollar Tree Stores cooperated with the authorities and has already adopted new policy, procedures and training programs related to hazardous waste disposal.
