VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - A memorial is slated for Sunday dedicated to Confederate soldiers who died during the Civil War.

The John C. Pemberton Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans has scheduled a memorial service at Soldiers’ Rest at Cedar Hill Cemetery to begin at 2 p.m.

The Vicksburg Post reports (https://bit.ly/1KgLZUy ) that Confederate burials in Soldiers’ Rest include representatives from every state of the Confederacy and several northerners who joined the southern fight.

Among the ranks is Gen. John S. Bowen who died of disease following the 47-day Siege of Vicksburg in 1863.

Edward Campbell, commander of the Pemberton camp, says the event is part of the observance of Confederate Memorial Day, which is Monday.

He says Gov. Phil Bryant declared April Confederate Heritage Day because the Civil War began and ended in April.

The Vicksburg event is one of several that have taken place this month.

During the Civil War many wounded and dying soldiers were taken to Vicksburg, which was an important military hospital city.
