GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. (AP) - The National Park Service plans a prescribed burn on part of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in the coming week.
Park officials announced Friday that the Shosone prescribed fire treatment is intended to decrease risks to life, resources and property.
If allowed by weather and fuel moisture conditions, the treatment would involve 1.6 square miles comprised primarily of pinion juniper and ponderosa pine.
According to park officials, specific objectives include improving defensible space in the wildland-urban interface within the South Rim’s developed area.
The burn will produce smoke visible along the South Rim and State Route 64, also known as East Rim Drive.
