HOLYOKE, Mass. (AP) - The state education board is planning to hear from Holyoke residents about plans to put the city’s public schools into state receivership.
The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will hold a forum Monday afternoon at the War Memorial Building in Holyoke.
Members of the board say their top goal is to listen to parents, teachers, residents and officials before deciding whether to designate Holyoke a “Level 5” or chronically underperforming school district.
That designation would put the city into receivership.
Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester has already recommended putting the schools into receivership, pointing to what he called their “persistent and pervasive” underperformance.
Massachusetts Teachers Association President Barbara Madeloni has called receivership a bad idea.
The board will make a final decision no later than May 19.
