MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s new Statehouse sergeant-at-arms says she’s pleased with the results of a first-in-memory evacuation drill.

Janet Miller was elected by lawmakers as the Statehouse logistics and security chief in February, with some legislators expressing concern at the time that they could not recall the last time there was a fire drill in Vermont’s capitol.

The alarm went off at 10 a.m. Thursday, after signs had been posted throughout the building saying that would happen. Miller said the Statehouse security staff got 100-percent compliance with the requirement that lawmakers, staff and others leave the building. Most heeded the request that they gather on the lawn outside. Some left the grounds.

Miller says now that a warned drill has gone smoothly, the next one may be a surprise.
