PIKETON, Ohio (AP) - The local president of the union representing some of the workers decontaminating and decommissioning a southern Ohio uranium plant is urging President Barack Obama to fully fund the project.
In a letter to Obama this week, United Steelworkers local president Herman Potter asked for continued funding for work at the Cold War-era uranium plant in Piketon.
Potter says in the letter that the people working at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant deserve full, stable funding of the project.
The U.S. Department of Energy runs the cleanup. Much of the funding comes from uranium transfers, which creates uncertainty about budgeting and jobs because officials don’t know how prices will fluctuate.
Ohio’s congressional delegation also has urged the White House to fully fund the project.
