TOLLESON, Ariz. (AP) - Tolleson firefighters say a man did not survive after getting swept into a Phoenix area canal.

KNXV-TV in Phoenix reports (https://bit.ly/1IcPMmt) the incident began around 5:30 a.m. Sunday when the 43-year-old man and his wife were fishing in the canal near 83rd Avenue and Van Buren Street.

Firefighters say the man dropped something in the water and attempted to retrieve it.

They say he went into the canal but could not get back out.

Firefighters pulled the man out of the water and began administering CPR but he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the incident is a reminder that canal waters can move quickly and there are few places where people can grab onto something or pull themselves out.
