ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. (AP) - Authorities are looking for a missing boater after his boat ran into a concrete pilling near the Gaston Dam in Halifax County.
State Wildlife Resources Commission Sgt. Glen Hatcher told the Daily Herald of Roanoke Rapids (https://bit.ly/1Etj52F ) that searchers aren’t sure if 31-year-old John Sutton was still in his boat or had already fallen out when it struck the piling early Saturday morning.
Authorities say divers and boaters searched for Sutton all day Saturday, but found nothing.
Hatcher says Sutton would drive his boat away from the dam, turn off the motor and fish while drifting, then drive the boat off again when it got too close to the dam.
Hatcher says a large volume of water was being discharged from the dam Saturday, making Lake Gaston especially turbulent.
