ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - Two-and-a-half years after Rapides Parish voters approved borrowing $23 million to renovate the Rapides Coliseum, work is getting near.
Groundbreaking is scheduled Monday. Ratcliff Construction Co. has 20 months to finish.
The Town Talk (https://townta.lk/1Dq1u6y ) reports that the Rapides Parish Police Jury approved a notice last week for work to start.
Voters approved a $22.9 million bond issue, backed by a 2.5-mill property tax, in November 2012 to renovate the coliseum. They also approved a 20-year, one-mill tax to pay for coliseum operations.
A sticking point was the status of nearly 16 acres for parking. The land was owned jointly by the city and parish. They finally agreed for the parish to buy out the city’s stake.
