KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) - Wildlife officials say the latest count of the endangered black-footed ferret at a northern Arizona site has come up with disappointing results.
The Kingman Daily Miner reports (https://bit.ly/1bFveXQ) that an Arizona Game and Fish Department tally earlier this month indicates there are less than half of the number of ferrets than previously in Seligman.
Jennifer Cordova, a supervisor of the ferret reintroduction effort there, says biologists only counted 11. There were 26 spotted last year.
The count was a follow-up to one done in March.
Cordova says a shortage of prey in the form of prairie dogs and difficulty spotting ferrets at night for the county may be factors in the low head count.
She says biologists will try to determine if there is a problem on the horizon.
