COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Fire officials say an 82-year-old southern Illinois woman has died in a house fire.

Collinsville Fire Chief Mark Emert says firefighters fought their way into Darlene Stovall’s home early Sunday when they found her dead in the front bedroom. The Belleville News-Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1JKi7Pz ) she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emert says the Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating the blaze, but Emert says Stovall may have fallen asleep while smoking. He says the home had two smoke detectors. Both were on the kitchen table. One didn’t work and the other was beeping too quietly to awaken Stovall.

An autopsy was scheduled.

Collinsville is in Madison County just east of St. Louis, Missouri.
