PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Nepalese community in Rhode Island is raising money and taking other steps to respond to the devastating earthquake that hit the nation over the weekend.
A magnitude 7.8 quake hit Nepal on Saturday, and several aftershocks have shaken the region. The death toll has surpassed 3,700.
The Nepalese Association of Rhode Island raised nearly $5,000 in a day in an online fundraiser, which it says it plans to send to local relief agencies.
The group estimates that around 300 people of Nepalese descent live in the Providence area.
The group is also collecting items to send to Nepal, including blankets, flashlights, protein bars, first aid kits and other items. Information can be found at www.naofri.org .
