COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) - Survey crews are marking off detours for a Row River National Recreation Trail safety project that started in 2011 after South Lane School Board member Michele Portmann was fatally hit by a truck while biking the path.

The Register-Guard reports (https://bit.ly/1GFobLF) that the $1 million project will improve safety at two of the trail’s hazardous intersections. Contractors start work next month on a tunnel that would allow bicyclists to bypass the intersection where Portmann was struck.

Officials say they decided to look into the safety matter when they heard about Portmann’s death, the second to occur at that intersection. Street-level lights are being installed for those who prefer to cross the roadway. The second trail being improved is about 1.5 miles away.

A federal grant is funding the improvements.
