POLICE SAY 14-YEAR-OLD PENNSYLVANIA GIRL CONSPIRED WITH SOLDIER BOYFRIEND TO KILL MOTHER

Police say the Lehigh County girl, Jamie Silvonek, texted the soldier hours before her mother’s death, saying, “I want her gone.” She and the boyfriend, 20-year-old Army Spc. Caleb Barnes are charged in the woman’s death.

2 PENNSYLVANIA CONGRESSMEN CONCERNED ABOUT DELAYS IN PROBE OF VA DISABILITY CLAIMS

Rep. Ryan Costello, a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and Rep. Patrick Meehan say the findings are long overdue. The congressmen visited the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs regional office for about two hours on Thursday before a long-awaited inspector general report due out this month on its handling of claims.

The testimony came Thursday in the racketeering trial of six former narcotics officers accused of stealing money and drugs from their targets and beating them at times to get information. The trial resumes Tuesday, after the Easter holiday weekend, and is expected to last about two months.

JUNIATA COLLEGE STUDENT BEING VERY THOREAU DURING SENIOR RESEARCH PROJECT

Dylan Miller’s project is on simple living. So he’s been emulating Henry David Thoreau by living deep in the woods about a half-hour’s walk from campus, in a hut he built out of fallen trees, leaves and a tarp. He studies by lantern and has had to chase away the occasional bear.
