PHOENIX (AP) - A competency hearing for a man accused of killing a Phoenix businessman and a Paradise Valley couple in 2012 ended early Friday after he told the court that he’s a robot.

As he has done in most other court proceedings, Michael Crane burst into a profanity-laced tirade soon after Friday’s hearing began. He was forcefully removed from the Maricopa County Superior Court room, but not before he told the judge, “I know that indeed I am an artificial intelligent life form, in other words, a robot.”

Crane also claims to be a “sovereign citizen.” His frequent court outbursts have caused delays and complications in the case because he contends he’s being unlawfully tried.

Testimony was heard later Friday from doctors who believe Crane suffers from psychotic delusions and may not be able to represent himself at trial.

Crane, 34, is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Bruce Gaudet in Phoenix on Jan. 26, 2012, and philanthropists Lawrence and Glenna Shapiro four days later.

Crane has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

The Shapiros, who were in their 70s, were found tied up and burned beyond recognition in their home. Gaudet’s body was found inside a burning Phoenix condominium.

The deaths were part of two separate home invasions involving Crane and other defendants, according to authorities.
