MONROE, La. (AP) - A Bastrop man has been sentenced to 36 years in prison after state District Judge Daniel Ellendar took into account his past criminal activity.

The News-Star reports (https://tnsne.ws/1arJClR ) 52-year-old Johnny Thompson was found guilty of felony theft Sept. 29. He reportedly entered a Bastrop business shortly after it opened and removed $888 from the store safe.

Before sentencing Thursday, Assistant District Attorney Devin Jones filed a habitual offender bill against Thompson. After reviewing his history, Ellendar found Thompson had at least seven prior felony convictions dating back as far as 1997 and a criminal record that included more than 46 arrests since 1991.

Ellendar then sentenced him to 36 years at hard labor without benefit of probation or suspension of sentence.
