CLEVELAND (AP) - Cleveland firefighters say they’re asking the city for ballistic vests ahead of the Republican National Convention in 2016.

President of the Cleveland firefighters’ union Frank Szabo tells WJW-TV (https://bit.ly/1BXGK6N ) that the city’s firefighters have been asking for the bulletproof vests for several years. Now they’re asking again, requesting they receive the equipment before the GOP presidential nominating convention that will be held in the city in July 2016.

Szabo says the national spotlight on the city comes with a concern for safety and security. He says firefighters are often the only first responders that don’t have the ballistic vests.

The city says it’s reviewing its options related to the vests to determine appropriate actions.
