DECATUR, Ill. (AP) - A Decatur man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for killing a woman during a robbery in 2008.
The (Decatur) Herald and Review (https://bit.ly/1BVKsgl ) reports 26-year-old Brandon Owens rejected his chance to speak to the victim’s family during Thursday’s hearing. He also interrupted and cursed at a prosecutor during proceedings.
Owens was convicted in the death of 20-year-old Leadgrie Cunningham. Authorities say the woman suffered 70 wounds during the attack.
Circuit Judge Timothy Steadman said during sentencing there “was no mercy shown to this victim” and “there will be no mercy shown here.” When Steadman issued the 60-year sentence Owens kicked off his sandals, prompting security to quickly whisk him out of the courtroom.
Owens’ public defender argued for a 30-year sentence.
