JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Supreme Court has suspended Madison County Justice Court Judge Bill Weisenberger who was recently arrested for simple assault on a vulnerable person.

The Supreme Court on Thursday granted a partial request from the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance that suspends Weisenberger immediately with pay.

The commission cited Weisenberger for assaulting a mentally disabled African-American male at a flea market last May and using a racial slur. The male’s name was not given.

The Supreme Court says the suspension will continue until pending resolution of the judicial watchdog’s formal complaint.

Weisenberger was released on a $10,000 bond. If convicted on the felony charge, he faces up to five years in prison. Weisenberger has entered a plea of not guilty. His trial is June 8.

Weisenberger has denied the allegations.
