PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - A Detroit man accused of using religion to gain the confidence of people with mortgage problems and steal hundreds of thousands of dollars has been sentenced to 30 to 99 years in prison.

Fifty-three-year-old Anthony Carta learned his punishment on Thursday in Circuit Court in Pontiac. He earlier pleaded guilty to seven felony charges. The case stemmed from an investigation by Attorney General Bill Schuette’s Corporate Oversight Division.

Schuette’s office says Carta’s company Freedom By Faith Ministries has been ordered to pay more than $674,000 in restitution while Carta has been ordered to pay $400,000 in restitution himself.

Carta was accused of pocketing money of those with mortgage problems but doing nothing to help more than 100 people. Charges in the case included conducting a criminal enterprise.
