RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Salix Pharmaceuticals is laying off nearly 260 employees at its headquarters in Raleigh, making the announcement on the same day the company was purchased by a Canadian company.

The decision to eliminate the majority of Salix’s workforce in Raleigh was announced in a letter filed with the North Carolina Department of Commerce this week.
The positions being eliminated range from administrative assistants to senior vice presidents. The job cuts are expected to be completed by the end of October.
