SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. (AP) - A Spotsylvania County couple has received suspended sentences for keeping three children in a locked room.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office says 28-year-old Scott Suggs and 36-year-old Brandy Kangas pleaded guilty this week to felony child neglect.

Suggs and Kangas each received a six-year suspended sentence and 10 years of good behavior. Each defendant also will be on supervised probation indefinitely.

The sheriff’s office says investigators found a 17-month-old boy, a 3-year-old girl and a 4-year-old girl confined to a sparsely furnished room stained with urine and feces. The children were fed through an opening in a homemade gate.

Investigators went to the residence on Dec. 16, 2014, after receiving an anonymous complaint.

The sheriff’s office says in a news release that the children were placed with foster care parents.
