BEAUMONT, Texas (AP) - A Southeast Texas man has been sentenced to 75 years in prison for shooting his girlfriend in the face a day after he tried to take her income tax refund.

The Beaumont Enterprise reports (https://bit.ly/1xJO1uu ) Trovoy Keith Jones had initially told authorities his girlfriend was shot in February 2013 during an attempted robbery outside her apartment.

The woman initially supported Jones’ claim for about a year but then told detectives Jones had shot her in her bedroom and had been threatening the woman and her family.

Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Leanne Winfrey says the 28-year-old woman suffered permanent paralysis from the chest down and now requires round-the-clock care for the rest of her life.

A Beaumont jury deliberated for about five minutes before sentencing Jones on Friday.
