TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Tuscaloosa police say a 9-year-old boy is expected to survive after he was mauled by a neighbor’s pit bull.

The Tuscaloosa News reports (https://bit.ly/1CZUHVC ) Titus Wilkerson suffered bites to his head, face, abdomen and legs when he was attacked by the dog while walking home from school Wednesday. Tuscaloosa County police Capt. Gary Hood says the boy underwent surgery at a Birmingham hospital, where his condition had stabilized.

Dollie Scott, a 75-year-old woman whose grandson owned the pit bull, says she laid on top of the dog and stuffed her fist in its mouth to help stop the attack until another neighbor struck the dog with a tire iron.

The dog’s owner, Christopher Guyton, was cited for violating the county’s leash law.
