PHOENIX (AP) - Recent government actions means the clunky rubber nozzles used on gas pump hoses in the Phoenix area for two decades will be going away.
The Maricopa Association of Governments announced Friday that the federal Environmental Protection Agency this week approved a state proposal to remove the vapor-recovery nozzles because they’re no longer needed to prevent the escape of harmful ozone emissions.
MAG says the nozzles outlived their usefulness as newer vehicles now have their own vapor recovery systems, and MAG says the nozzles actually don’t work well with the vehicles’ own systems.
EPA Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld signed a Federal Register notice this week approving a revised Arizona anti-pollution plan for the Phoenix area.
The plan revision asked EPA to remove the nozzle requirement for existing facilities in October 2016.
