EDGEWOOD, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police say officers fatally shot an armed suspect in Edgewood after he threatened them with a rifle.

Authorities say the incident started Friday afternoon when Edgewood police responded to an altercation involving several people.

Police say the suspect fired at someone with his rifle and then gave chase in a vehicle.

State Police and Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputies were called to assist when the suspect barricaded himself in his vehicle.

Law enforcement officers tried negotiating with him until 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

State Police say he refused to comply with orders to surrender and repeatedly stated a desire to shoot officers.

They fired their weapons after the suspect actively threatened them with his rifle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
