MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - As the American Atheists hold their national convention in Memphis this week, local Christians are responding with a “Memphis Exalts Jesus” worship concert at AutoZone Park.

American Atheists spokeswoman Danielle Muscato told the Commercial Appeal (https://bit.ly/1FtX7LQ) the group intentionally seeks out cities where there is what she calls “religious suppression.”

She said they hope to let local members of the atheist community know they are not alone. And they want to show the religious community that atheists aren’t outsiders. They probably already have friends and neighbors who are atheists but are afraid to talk about it because of social pressure, Muscato said.

Meanwhile, Jan Winterburn, who helped organize the worship concert said it has quickly grown beyond a protest.

“We’re not against atheists. We love them,” she said.
