KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - The Blood Bank of Hawaii plans to reach out to neighbor islands to help fill its supply gap when it closes down one of its two donation centers on Oahu.
West Hawaii Today (https://bit.ly/1NK0xfx ) reports the blood bank’s Dillingham Donor Center in Honolulu accounts for 36 percent of the state’s blood supply. But the center is due to close in the next few months before construction of Honolulu’s new rail line begins in the Dillingham area.
Blood Bank Marketing Director Maura Dolormente says the organization will increasingly reach out to the neighbor islands.
The blood bank doesn’t have a dedicated collection center on any neighbor island. Instead, it relies on blood drives held at various locations.
She says the Big Island contributes 8.4 percent to the state’s blood supply.
