CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Champaign Mayor Don Gerard is apologizing after a volunteer for his campaign committee confronted a liquor store employee over a campaign sign that was taken down.
According to the employee, the volunteer posed as a city liquor official and threatened to have the store’s license revoked.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1CEEKmp ) that Gerard met with the store owners Friday and apologized for the confrontation, which took place Thursday.
Gerard said that at first he thought it was someone trying to sabotage his campaign, but that he determined later it was a volunteer whom he called “misguided.”
Store owner Manish Puri said he felt the incident was an attempt to step on his political freedom, but added that Gerard’s apology - in his words - “squares up things.”
